2017 Konopiště Open Round 1 Recap

The 2nd Disc Golf World Tour event is officially underway here in beautiful Czechia and the first round brought us some hot scores on the gorgeous Franz Ferdinand course. The day started with a slight drizzle, but the weather held off nicely throughout the round, with temperatures around 20°C / 68°F. The scoring conditions were perfect, as there was practically no wind on the course today and the only bits of rain we saw were nothing but momentary trickles.

Eveliina Salonen leads the FPO field

Eveliina Salonen leads the FPO field.

Over at the FPO division, the highest rated young lady on the course, Finnish Eveliina Salonen, started the the day with a very solid 3 birdies and 6 pars for the first 9 holes. The very long back 9 bit back a little however, and Eveliina is leading the FPO field with an even par 67 for the day.

Vanessa Van Dyken sits 4 shots behind the leader.

Behind Eveliina, Vanessa Van Dyken (USA) is on the 2nd place, 4 strokes back of the leader. Rounding out the FPO lead card will be Henna Blomroos (FIN) with her +5 for the first day and Katka Bodová (SVK), who’s tied with Estonian Kristin Tattar, but will make the final spot in the lead card due to her lower PDGA number. Wysocki shoots lights out, sets a new course record

While the majority of the focus today was on the fan-voted DGWT Open Division feature card, the reigning world champion Ricky Wysocki, who began his round on the second to last group of the day, was clearly the hottest competitor on the field today. Wysocki’s -15 score was enough to break the previous course record of -13, shot by Paul McBeth in 2016. Ricky’s round consisted of a total of 15 birdies and 3 pars. He was close to hitting an Eagle on hole 11, but missed the putt just barely. Ricky’s amazing round puts him on top of the leaderboard with a comfortable 4 stroke buffer before the competition.

Competition gets fierce behind the leader

Simon Lizotte and Paul McBeth were battling neck & neck during the first round.

Behind the leader, there’s 4 athletes tied to the 2nd spot with a total of -11 for the day. The duo of American 2nd time Konopiště Open visitors, Paul McBeth and Nate Sexton, both were able to keep their scorecards bogey free today and will be making a charge cut the deficit against the leader on the lead card on Saturday.

The defending Konopiště Open champion Simon Lizotte will be joining the trio of top US professionals on the lead card with his -11 for the day, while Finnish Luukas Rokkanen has to settle for the number 1 spot on the chase card on Saturday, due to his lower PDGA number. We’re also very pleased to see a number of different nationalities within striking distance of the lead card, as tied to the sixth place with the score of -9 are Marvin Tetzel (GER), Dominik Stampfer (GER), Raimo Sokka (FIN), Marcus Westberg (SWE). KJ Nybo (DEN), Juhani Vainio (FIN) & Teemu Nissinen (FIN) are just one stroke behind  the fivesome on the tied 11th place.
