EO2016 Round 1 recap: The favourites take the early lead

Thursday’s first round at “The Beast” begun with beautiful clear sunny skies that would continue all the way until the last putts by our feature card, consisting of the defending European Open champion Paul McBeth, Estonian Champion Martin Rotmeister, Women’s World Champion Catrina Allen and local Finnish favourite Janne Hirsimäki. With the temperatures around 24°C (75°F) and very calm winds, the scoring conditions were perfect for the first round.

The Beast gives no mercy

Nokia local Lassi Hakulinen will be on the chase card tomorrow.

Despite the weather that the EO veteran Avery described to be “The best he has ever seen on his many trips to Finland”, The world famous Nokia DiscGolfPark course showed its beastly qualities to the field of 144 athletes, as only the 2014 Finnish Champion Jalle Stoor was able to return a bogey free scorecard with 5 birdies and 13 pars. The total score of -5 puts Jalle in the 2nd card with 3 other young Finnish talents: Ville Ahokas (-6), home course hero Lassi Hakulinen (-5) and the reigning Finnish Champion Pasi Koivu (-5).

Tomorrow’s lead card will consist of the very 4 players we suspected to be the favourites for the week. The top 2 players in the world Paul McBeth and Ricky Wysocki share the lead with their (-8) for the day, while the top European players Simon Lizotte (GER) and KJ Nybo (DEN) are just one stroke behind at the tied 3rd place. These guys are well-known to put out a show for the crowds, and with the weather for tomorrow looking to be equally good as today, we highly recommend everyone within driving distance to make the trip to Nokia for Friday’s moving day rounds.

Our cameras followed the feature card consisting of Catrina Allen (pictured), Paul McBeth, Martin Rotmeister and Janne Hirsimäki on the first round.

During the 1st round, our social media team was following the reigning EO champion Paul McBeth, as well as other select players from the late groups. As a result, you can find a lot of photo updates, as well as hole-specific play-by-play videos from our instagram account. Make sure to check them out here!

We also have our production crew piecing together a wrap up show to be released later tonight. The show will feature select plays from the first round, as well as player interviews and Disc Golf Metrix analysis by the 2009 disc golf world champion Avery Jenkins. Stay tuned for the show this evening and in the meanwhile, go check out the course intro video from Wednesday!
